Dear friends, We just want to let you know that we are both fine. The phone lines are still a bit wonkey, so if we haven't talked to you in person yet, we will soon. Tuesday had us a bit shaken up (emotionally) but as you can see from the map, our apartment is a safe distance from ground zero. Tiffany was on her way to work (mid-town, east side, near Grand Central) when the subways shut down. After being stuck between stations for 45 minutes, she walked back home. Alex grabbed the video camera and walked south. I was able to get within ten blocks of the disaster, but no closer. A group of us wanted to volunteer to help, but since buildings were still burning - and falling - there was nothing that could be done. I'll write more later, but some snippets of conversations overheard.... A small girl in her daddy's arms, "What's highjacking?" Civilian directing traffic, "Get out of the street. Get out of the street. This isn't a carnival, something happened here today!" Construction worker, "This is someone's fucked up idea of urban renewal." Lots of love to you all. Alex & Tiffany |
